Financial Pressures

NHS ended this past fiscal year on March 31, 2008 with a budget deficit of $17.9 million on a $370 million annual operating budget. Over the next few years NHS will continue to face financial pressures and at this time we project a $15 million deficit for next year.

We have had and continue to have ongoing discussions with the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) and with the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant Local Health Integration Network (HNHB LHIN) since April 2007, when it assumed responsibility from the MOHLTC for planning, funding and integrating health services in the geographic area that includes Niagara.

The HNHB LHIN through its legal authority has asked our hospital to produce a Hospital Improvement Plan (HIP) due to the fact we were unable to balance our budget. We are hopeful that through this process, we will find better ways of delivering quality care to our community and make better use of all our resources.
