NHS at a Glance
The NHS forms a sophisticated and innovative network of health services stretching from Lake Erie to Lake Ontario. It is Ontario’s largest multi-site hospital amalgamation comprised of six hospital sites and an ambulatory care centre serving 437,000 residents across the 12 municipalities making up the Regional Municipality of Niagara.
- Larger community acute care hospitals: Greater Niagara General Site, St. Catharines General Site and Welland Hospital Site
- Smaller, rural community hospitals: Douglas Memorial Hospital Site, Niagara-on-the-Lake Hospital Site and Port Colborne General Site
- Ambulatory (Outpatient) Centre: St. Catharines’ Ontario Street Site

The NHS employs more than 4,300 employees, of whom about 1,800 are nurses, and has approximately 925 beds. It is supported by a medical staff of about 560 physicians and is served by more than 1,100 active volunteers.
In 2007-08, NHS provided care to almost 30,000 acute care in-patients. Nearly 200,000 patients were treated at our five 24/7 Emergency Departments and one 14-hour Prompt Care Centre this past year.
