Geographic Overview
The Niagara Region is a 1,863 sq. km. peninsula defined by Lake Ontario to the north and the Niagara River and Lake Erie to the east and south, beyond which lays New York State. The western boundary of the region borders on the counties of Haldimand, Norfolk and the city of Hamilton.
Niagara has an upper tier regional municipal government and 12 local area municipalities. Niagara is an attractive retirement destination due to its ‘southerly’ location, a moderate climate, and proximity to the U.S.A. The three largest municipalities of St. Catharines, Welland and Niagara Falls contain 62% of the population of Niagara. The municipalities located in the north of Niagara contain a slightly higher proportion of the total regional population (52%), compared to the municipalities located in the south of Niagara (48%).
