Centres of excellence are used for highly complex and often less common health-care procedures that require a high degree of specialization and experience to achieve the best health outcomes for patients.
Cancer Care Ontario is working with regional cancer centres and other hospitals and cancer surgeons to develop such centres of excellence for complex and higher-risk cancer surgeries, including for pancreatic and certain lung and gynecological cancers.
There is an established relationship between the number of these complex surgeries that a hospital performs, the types of teams, training and expertise available at a hospital and the safety and outcomes of surgery including complications and death rates.
These centres must meet quality standards based on the best evidence. Centres of excellence for these types of cancer surgery mean that all patients will have access to the highest quality and safest care regardless of where they live.
